Pickleball Players Embrace Quiet Paddles at Lang Park in Laguna Beach

The sound of pickleball paddles hitting the ball at Lang Park in Laguna Beach has been a point of contention for nearby residents at the Vista Aliso senior living community. After years of complaints about the noise disrupting their peace and tranquility, the City Council took action to address the issue.

On Thursday, April 10, a new law went into effect at Lang Park requiring players to use quiet paddles that deaden the plastic sound. The paddles, sold by the city at cost, have been purchased by over 220 players, each paying more than $100 for the switch.

The decision to implement the quiet paddles came after previous efforts to reduce noise, such as installing sound barriers around the courts and limiting playing hours, did not fully alleviate the concerns of the neighboring community. Councilmember Sue Kempf mentioned that the city may consider moving the courts further away from the community in the future.

Despite the cost and adjustment to the new paddles, players at Lang Park have expressed that it is worth it to continue playing at the popular South Laguna park. Some players have noted that the quiet paddles do make a difference in reducing the noise level, while others have suggested using quiet balls as well.

Overall, the response from players has been mixed, with some feeling that the restrictions placed on them are excessive. However, many players are willing to comply with the new law in order to continue enjoying the courts at Lang Park.

As the pickleball community in Laguna Beach adapts to the changes, the debate over noise levels and quality of life for residents near the courts continues. The city will continue to monitor the situation and make adjustments as needed to ensure a harmonious coexistence between players and neighbors.
