Lakeway City Council Amends Parks Strategic Plan to Address Pickleball Court Parking Issue

The Lakeway City Council made a significant decision at a special meeting on March 6, amending the Parks Strategic Plan to rescind the prior plan to construct a parking lot for the Sailmaster pickleball courts. This decision came after concerns were raised about the safety and property values of residents living near the proposed parking lot location.

Parks and Recreation Director Andra Bennett explained that the original plan included a 14-space parking lot to be built across Sailmaster at the entrance of Hurst Creek Greenbelt. However, with no parking available to service the three pickleball courts in the area, patrons had been parking along Sailmaster within the right of way, causing issues for nearby residents.

Lakeway resident Sharon Hatch, who owns properties near Sailmaster, expressed her concerns about the safety of children and the impact on property values if the parking lot were to be constructed. Other residents, like Laura Resnick-Chavez, acknowledged the parking issues but emphasized the importance of finding a solution that works for everyone, as pickleball is more than just a sport for many players.

In a unanimous decision, the council decided to eliminate the construction of the parking lot and allocate the funds for alternatives, such as repurposing the basketball court at Lakeway City Park and adding more pickleball and basketball courts. Mayor Pro Tem Gretchen Vance highlighted the importance of ensuring the safety of residents and emergency access in the area, referring to the situation as a “lifestyle versus life” issue.

The decision to amend the Parks Strategic Plan reflects the council’s commitment to addressing the concerns of residents while also providing recreational opportunities for the community. This story showcases the importance of balancing the needs of different stakeholders in local decision-making processes.
