Kuching Festival Unveils Exciting New Programs to Engage Youth

KUCHING (May 29) – The Kuching Festival is set to embrace the interests of the younger generation with the introduction of three dynamic new programs, as announced by Datuk Wee Hong Seng, the Mayor of Kuching South. The festival, which runs from July 25 to August 17, will feature the inaugural MBKS Mayor’s Pickleball Championship, a vibrant Cosplay Competition, and an electrifying K-Pop Dance Cover Competition.

The Pickleball Championship, scheduled for August 2-3 at Picklepro Kuching, will showcase various categories including Women’s Doubles Open, Men’s Doubles Open, Mixed Doubles Open, and Veteran Men’s Doubles Open. “This fast-growing sport is perfect for promoting health and community bonding,” said Wee during a press conference at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) building. To build excitement and awareness, a Community Pickleball Month will take place throughout July, featuring free coaching sessions every Saturday morning.

The festival will also celebrate creativity and fandom with the Cosplay Competition on August 2 at the MBKS Theatre in Kuching Park. Participants will have the opportunity to showcase their favorite characters in a colorful display of costumes and creativity. Following this, the K-Pop Dance Cover Competition on August 3 promises to bring high-energy performances from dance crews across the region, welcoming participants from outside Sarawak.

Wee emphasized that the Kuching Festival is more than just a series of events; it is a cherished tradition that reflects the city’s diverse culture and creativity. “We are united in our purpose to grow, connect, and thrive together,” he stated.

In addition to these new programs, the festival will feature the ever-popular Kuching Festival Fair, which runs nightly from 6 PM to 11 PM at Dewan Masyarakat MBKS. Attendees can look forward to a food fair with hundreds of stalls, a trade fair showcasing local entrepreneurs, and a lineup of cultural shows and performances.

This year also marks the 10th anniversary of the Kuching Zumba Fiesta, with a record-breaking event planned for August 2 at the Sarawak Hockey Stadium, aiming to gather 10,000 participants to break the Malaysia Book of Records for the largest Zumba session.

Other festival highlights include the Garden Show, Mayor’s Walk, Folk Dance Night, martial arts displays, and the Kuching Half Marathon. The return of “Kuching’s Got Talent” promises bigger prizes and showcases of incredible local talent.

With a commitment to fostering community spirit and celebrating cultural diversity, this year’s Kuching Festival is poised to be an unforgettable experience for residents and visitors alike.
