Pickleball National Championships: A Final for the Ages at University of Bolton Arena

In a thrilling final at the University of Bolton Arena, Kirk and partner Ato Stephens secured a gold medal at the pickleball national championships after a stunning comeback win. Despite losing the first game 11-3, the duo rallied to win the next two sets 11-9 and 11-1, with Kirk making an incredible comeback from 9-1 down in the second set.

Reflecting on their victory, Kirk expressed her disbelief at their win, stating, “I can’t believe we actually won it.” She credited their determination and strategic thinking for their success, emphasizing the importance of focusing on one point at a time. Despite playing in a younger category due to their age difference, Kirk, 56, and Ato, 49, were thrilled with their performance and the outcome of the championship.

Pickleball, a popular racket sport played with paddles and a plastic ball, has been gaining traction in England with players of all ages and abilities participating in the game. The sport, named after the founders’ pet dog Pickle, offers a friendly and inclusive environment for players to compete and build friendships.

The English Nationals, held from October 31 to November 3 at Bolton Arena, featured a record number of 1,111 pickleball players from across the North West. Kirk highlighted the growing popularity and competitiveness of the sport in England, noting the increasing skill level of players and the welcoming nature of pickleball tournaments for participants of all backgrounds.

With Pickleball England announcing a record number of over 1,000 players at the upcoming 2024 Skechers English Nationals, the sport continues to attract a diverse range of participants.
