John Gullo: The Father of Professional Pickleball and Pickleball Ambassador for Northern Utah

John Gullo, known as ‘The Father Of Professional Pickleball’, is making waves in the world of pickleball in Northern Utah. His dedication to the sport has earned him a spot in the Pickleball Hall Of Fame, Class of 2024, for his outstanding contributions.

Gullo’s impact on the pickleball community in Ogden, Utah, is undeniable. He played a key role in establishing The Tournament of Champions as the first and highest paying tournament for professional players. Under his leadership, the Brigham City pickleball courts were expanded threefold, including the addition of a championship court and seating to accommodate the growing popularity of the sport.

Utah has seen a surge in pickleball engagement, with the state leading the country in per capita participation and online searches for the sport. This success can be attributed to Gullo’s efforts in promoting pickleball and expanding facilities across Northern Utah, with over 360 pickleball courts now available in 10 cities.

Gullo’s journey with pickleball began in his mid-60s, following a life-changing health scare that led him to discover the sport. Since then, he has been dedicated to giving back to the community through initiatives such as the American Dream Foundation, which provides scholarships for junior competitions at the Tournament of Champions.

In addition to his philanthropic efforts, Gullo has also made significant strides in professional pickleball, founding the Professional Pickleball Federation and launching its inaugural professional tour. He was the first to provide compensation and accommodation for referees and to broadcast matches live, setting a new standard for the sport.

Gullo’s impact on pickleball will be officially recognized at an induction ceremony in Mesa, Arizona, on November 14. His legacy as a pickleball ambassador and advocate for youth involvement in the sport will continue to inspire players and fans alike.
