“Homecoming Season at HBCUs in North Carolina: A Look at Each Celebration”
As homecoming season approaches, HBCU alumni in North Carolina are gearing up for a week of festivities, football games, and community engagement on their alma mater’s campuses. Homecoming at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) goes beyond just a football game, with events like tailgating, parties, performances, and special appearances creating a family reunion-style atmosphere.
With 10 HBCUs in North Carolina, each school has its own unique homecoming celebration. Bennett College, for example, does not have a traditional homecoming but instead hosts an annual week-long event called Ebony Soul in the spring semester. Elizabeth City State University’s homecoming week, from Oct. 20 to Oct. 26, includes a block party, late-night concert, and special events like Silent Night and a step show.
Fayetteville State University’s homecoming, also from Oct. 20 to Oct. 27, features a game against Shaw University, a homecoming parade, and events like the Wine Down cocktail event. Johnson C. Smith University, Livingstone College, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina Central University, Shaw University, and Winston-Salem State University all have their own exciting homecoming events planned as well.
From sold-out football games to alumni pickleball days and student talent showcases, HBCU homecomings in North Carolina are sure to be a memorable experience for all who attend. Stay tuned for more details on Saint Augustine’s University’s homecoming celebration, and mark your calendars for a week of fun and festivities at Winston-Salem State University from Nov. 3 to Nov. 10.
