Grace College Receives Grant for Pickleball Equipment, Expands Community Play Opportunities

WINONA LAKE — Grace College has recently been awarded a grant from the K21 Health Foundation for nearly $25,000 in pickleball equipment for the Gordon Health and Wellness Center (GHAWC). This grant will allow for the expansion of open play opportunities for all skill levels, with games now available Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The funding from the grant has been used to purchase mobile nets, new balls, paddles, and temporary courts, enabling games to be played indoors throughout the winter months and facilitating tournaments year-round. Jordan Weidner, director of the Gordon Health and Wellness Center, expressed excitement about the growth of the sport within the community, noting that participation has doubled since the introduction of indoor pickleball.

The K21 Health Foundation, a private organization dedicated to improving health and wellness in Kosciusko County, has recognized the popularity of pickleball in the area and the need for year-round recreational opportunities. Rich Haddad, president and CEO of the foundation, emphasized the rapid growth of the sport and the importance of providing community members with outlets for staying active throughout the year.

In addition to open community court time during the week, Grace College has planned several pickleball tournaments for students in the coming months. The GHAWC facilities are also available to various groups, including college employees, alumni, community senior citizens, local law enforcement, first responders, and current military personnel.

Weidner reported a strong turnout of over 30 community members playing pickleball on the new courts last Friday morning and expressed hopes for continued growth as a result of the grant. Those interested in learning more about the GHAWC can visit the Grace College website, while more information about the K21 Health Foundation can be found on their website.

The partnership between Grace College and the K21 Health Foundation highlights the commitment to promoting health and wellness within the community through the popular and rapidly growing sport of pickleball.
