London Churches Embrace Pickleball to Build Community and Generate Revenue

Pickleball Players Flock to London Churches for Court Time

In a unique twist, London churches are opening their doors to pickleball players in the community, offering up their unused space for the popular sport. Oakridge Presbyterian Church, along with several others in the area, have found a way to fill a need for recreational activities while also generating revenue for the church.

Nancy Martin, a volunteer at Oakridge Presbyterian Church, saw the opportunity to utilize the empty gym space during the day for pickleball, a sport she enjoys playing with friends. The idea quickly caught on, with other churches like Wesley-Knox United Church, Ridgeview Community Church, and Colborne Street United Church following suit.

Laverne Kirkness, who coordinates the pickleball program at Colborne Street United Church, noted that the pandemic has led to a drop in church enrollments, prompting the need for alternative ways to keep the doors open. By offering affordable court rentals and clinics, churches are reinventing themselves to be more involved in the community and provide valuable facilities for residents.

The pickleball craze has taken off, with players like Angela Everest booking regular court time at Oakridge Presbyterian Church. The spacious courts and community-focused atmosphere have attracted players from all walks of life, not just church members. This new approach to community engagement is not only keeping churches afloat financially but also helping to raise awareness of their presence in the neighborhood.

As churches in London continue to adapt to changing times, offering activities like pickleball may just be the key to staying relevant and connected to the community. Who knew that the rhythmic thud of a pickleball could bring new life to the quiet halls of a church?
