Windsor Pickleball Club Advocates for Safety Measures at WFCU After Fatal Accident
The Windsor Pickleball Club is pushing for increased safety measures at the Windsor Family Credit Union (WFCU) after a tragic incident resulted in the death of a club member. The club is advocating for new padding to be installed along the walls of the gym to prevent future accidents.
Club president Patrick Brown revealed that an 80-year-old Windsor man passed away after hitting his head on the wall while playing pickleball at the WFCU on June 28, 2024. The devastating incident has prompted the club to take action and request for additional safety features to be implemented.
During a meeting with Windsor City Council, Brown emphasized the importance of installing padding to avoid similar tragedies in the future. The club is also looking to upgrade other aspects of the facility, such as nets and temporary flooring, to enhance safety and gameplay.
Members of the Windsor Pickleball Club expressed their shock and sadness over the incident, with club convenor Pamela Knowler describing the community as “heartsick.” The club is determined to cover the costs of the upgrades through grants and funds, with hopes that the city will assist in installing the necessary safety measures.
As the club awaits quotes for the project, they are hopeful that the padding will be installed in the near future. The matter has been brought to Windsor’s 2025 budget talks, indicating a commitment to prioritizing safety within the pickleball community.
