Exciting Expansion at Prairie Trail Sports Complex in Ankeny’s Growing Area

The Prairie Trail Sports Complex in Ankeny is expanding with the addition of two new buildings, set to meet the growing demand for recreation and athletic space in the area. The first building, called the Fieldhouse, is nearing completion and will offer amenities such as basketball, volleyball, and pickleball courts.

Developer and longtime youth and college basketball coach David Lane announced the groundbreaking of two new buildings at a recent ceremony. The Diamond building, a 16,000 square-foot baseball and softball facility, and the West Gym, a 26,000 square-foot volleyball and basketball addition to the Fieldhouse, are expected to open in fall 2023.

The rapid construction timeline reflects the urgent need for more indoor athletic space in Ankeny, as highlighted in a 2022 report commissioned by the city. With the youth sports industry booming, facilities like the Prairie Trail Sports Complex are essential for hosting tournaments, clinics, camps, and rentals.

Similar sports centers have been popping up around the Des Moines metro, such as the RecPlex in West Des Moines and Ignit in Johnston. The addition of these new buildings at the Prairie Trail Sports Complex will further enhance the athletic opportunities available to residents in the area.
