Pickleball in India: A New Federation Sparks Controversy

New Delhi, May 14, 2025 — The burgeoning sport of pickleball in India has become embroiled in controversy following the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) granting national federation status to the newly formed Indian Pickleball Association (IPA). This decision, made on April 25, has ignited protests from the All India Pickleball Association (AIPA), which has been instrumental in the sport’s development for nearly two decades.

AIPA’s Legacy vs. IPA’s Emergence

Established in 2007, AIPA has cultivated a robust presence across 24 states, advocating for the sport’s growth and nurturing talent. The association argues that its long-standing contributions should have earned it the coveted National Sports Federation (NSF) status, rather than awarding it to the IPA, which was formed just six months ago.

AIPA President Arvind Ramesh Prabhoo expressed his discontent with the MYAS decision, labeling it "premature and unjust." He emphasized that AIPA has laid a solid foundation for pickleball in India and should have been recognized for its consistent efforts over the years.

"We have worked tirelessly to introduce and expand pickleball across India," Prabhoo stated. "Despite our extensive history and contributions, the recognition went to a body with little track record."

Concerns Over Fairness and Transparency

Prabhoo raised critical concerns about the process behind MYAS’s decision, noting that AIPA submitted its application for NSF status months before the IPA was even established. "On October 18, 2024, we applied for recognition, yet MYAS chose to overlook our longstanding efforts," he said, highlighting potential violations of the National Sports Code of 2011, which mandates substantial activity and longevity for NSF eligibility.

AIPA’s Role in Developing Pickleball

AIPA’s influence on the sport is undeniable. The association has organized numerous national and international tournaments, including the Bainbridge Cup and the World Pickleball Championship. It has also developed comprehensive training programs, producing over 100 certified coaches and ensuring officiating standards meet international criteria.

"Our commitment to grassroots development is unwavering," Prabhoo asserted, detailing AIPA’s holistic approach to building the sport’s infrastructure.

Global Impact and Future Aspirations

AIPA’s efforts extend beyond national borders, having represented India at various international competitions. The association has been a full member of the International Pickleball Federation since 2015 and has sent teams to prestigious events, including the Asian Pickleball Games and the World Pickleball Championships.

Despite the recent setback, AIPA remains focused on its mission to grow pickleball in India. Prabhoo acknowledged the challenges posed by the sport’s absence from the Olympic roster but expressed hope that future affiliations with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) could pave the way for greater support.

"Our governance system is well-established, and our international affiliations are testaments to our commitment to bringing India to the world stage for pickleball," he concluded.

As the dispute unfolds, the future of pickleball in India hangs in the balance, with AIPA determined to continue its legacy while navigating the complexities of a rapidly evolving sports landscape.
