New Newmarket Sports Pad to Feature Pickleball and Basketball Courts

The Town of Newmarket is set to enhance its sports facilities with the addition of pickleball courts and a basketball court at Environmental Park. Following a survey with over 500 responses, residents expressed their desire for these specific amenities, leading to the decision to create a sports pad featuring three regulation pickleball courts overlaid with a regulation basketball court.

During an online meeting held on October 21, Capital works Danyal Sakrani highlighted the need for more sports facilities in the ward area and emphasized that this project aims to address that gap. With pickleball and basketball being the top choices among respondents, the town plans to cater to these popular sports while also anticipating general sports use on the courts.

While 77% of survey respondents were supportive of the sports court, some concerns were raised regarding noise and parking. The town is already reviewing a parking lot expansion project to address this issue. Additionally, 13 trees will be moved and six new ones planted as part of the Environment Park project, with no lighting planned for the courts.

The sports pad is expected to be completed by the summer of 2025, providing residents with a new recreational space to enjoy. For more information, visit heynewmarket.ca/sportcourts. The addition of these facilities is sure to benefit the community and provide a space for residents of all ages to engage in physical activity and sports.
