Eastern Illinois University (EIU) is celebrating the opening of new indoor and outdoor pickleball courts, along with renovations to its Student Recreation Center (SRC), as part of a growing national trend to enhance student physical activity and social engagement. Pickleball participation has surged over 200% nationwide in recent years, with young adults aged 25-35 now the largest group of players. The new facilities aim to foster student belonging and campus involvement, aligning with EIU’s health and recreation goals. Ribbon-cutting ceremonies are scheduled for August 21 and August 25, featuring remarks from university leaders and student representatives, with opportunities for attendees to play pickleball and other sports.
The outdoor courts are located near Groniger Arena, while the indoor courts and renovated SRC studios—including spaces for aerobics, dance, and Synrgy workouts—are housed in the Lantz Sports Complex. EIU joins over 200 U.S. campuses, including the University of Alabama and Arkansas Tech University, in offering pickleball as part of their athletic and recreational programs. The events are free and open to the public, highlighting EIU’s commitment to expanding recreational opportunities and fostering community through sport.
