Pickleball Takes Center Stage at Dresden Elementary School: A New Initiative to Teach Students the Sport
The sport of pickleball is making its way into schools, with Dresden Elementary School leading the way in introducing students to this fast-growing activity. Physical education teacher Kadeem Edge and certified pickleball instructor Elizabeth Sylvester have collaborated to create a four-week instructional unit that teaches students the fundamentals of pickleball.
To accommodate the new program, volunteers from the Dresden Recreation Committee helped transform the school gym into two pickleball courts. The focus of the lessons is on basic ball control and paddle handling, providing students with the necessary skills to enjoy the game. Pickleball is known for being accessible to players of all ages, making it an ideal sport to introduce at the elementary level.
Beyond the classroom, students will have the opportunity to further develop their skills at the Bridge Academy Library’s outdoor pickleball court this summer. The Bridge Academy, which supports Dresden children through academic scholarships, offers free access to its pickleball facilities for youth and adults in the community.
This initiative is part of a larger effort to promote community engagement through sports and introduce pickleball to younger players. By integrating pickleball into the school curriculum, Dresden Elementary hopes to encourage students to stay active and participate in recreational activities outside of school.
Overall, the expansion of pickleball in schools like Dresden Elementary is a positive step towards promoting lifelong physical activity and fostering a love for sports among students.
