Discussion on Facility Use for Community Education Groups and Youth Programs at Spooner Middle School’s Antholz Gym
The debate over facility use at Spooner Middle School’s Antholz Gym took center stage at the recent Spooner School Board’s Committee of the Whole meeting. The discussion revolved around the increasing demand for gym space by Community Education groups and youth programs, particularly Spooner Backcourt and the popular pickleball program.
According to facility use coordinator Sarah Hansen, there have been scheduling conflicts and shared spaces that need to be addressed. Spooner Backcourt, which serves 75 students, has requested more priority in gym usage to avoid late-night practices on school nights. On the other hand, the pickleball program, with 160 registered participants, has been a consistent user of the gym for years.
Tom Terrill, representing the pickleball players, emphasized the sport’s growing popularity and the need for consistent gym time. He highlighted the group’s proactive involvement with the school and their contribution to promoting sports during Wellness Day. However, Melissa Smith of Spooner Backcourt argued that their group also provides its own equipment and should be given fair consideration for gym time.
The debate over gym usage for these two groups reflects a larger issue of balancing community needs with school priorities. The committee agreed that further discussion is necessary to find a solution that benefits all parties involved. Stay tuned for updates on this ongoing debate at the next school board meeting.
