Controversy Surrounds Gov. Ron DeSantis’ Plan to Develop State Parks with Business Ventures

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Gov. Ron DeSantis’ proposal to develop state parks with business ventures such as golf courses, pickleball courts, and large hotels has faced significant opposition from both sides of the political spectrum. The plan hit a snag after a key supporter, the Tuskegee Dunes Foundation, withdrew its proposal to build golf courses at Jonathan Dickinson State Park in southeast Florida.

The Department of Environmental Protection confirmed the withdrawal in an email, stating that the project would be removed from agency review. This decision has raised questions about the future of the “Great Outdoors Initiative,” which aims to introduce various projects at nine state parks for public enjoyment.

The backlash against the plan was so intense that scheduled hearings were scrapped and rescheduled for after Labor Day. Republican Senators Rick Scott and Marco Rubio, along with GOP Rep. Brian Mast, expressed concerns about the rushed timeline for the project. Democratic Rep. Kathy Castor criticized the plan for prioritizing profits over environmental conservation.

Protests near the nine parks drew hundreds of people, united in their opposition to the development plans. Artist Veronica Steiner, whose wildlife art adorned protest signs, emphasized the importance of protecting Florida’s natural resources regardless of political affiliations.

While previous administrations have considered similar revenue-generating ideas for state parks, public opposition has led to the abandonment of such proposals in the past. The involvement of the Tuskegee Dunes Foundation, which aimed to honor the Tuskegee Airmen through the golf course project, added another layer of controversy to the plan.

Environmental groups have vowed to continue opposing any development at the parks, citing the importance of preserving Florida’s natural beauty and wildlife. The recent withdrawal of the Tuskegee Dunes Foundation’s proposal at Jonathan Dickinson State Park reflects the growing resistance to commercial ventures on public lands.

As the debate continues, the future of the “Great Outdoors Initiative” remains uncertain, with stakeholders on both sides of the issue advocating for the protection of Florida’s parks and wildlife.
