Delhi High Court Hearing: AIPA vs. GOI and IPA Developments in Pickleball Governance

Delhi High Court Hears Case on Pickleball Governance Amidst Controversy

New Delhi, India – May 20, 2023: In a significant development for the burgeoning sport of pickleball in India, the Delhi High Court convened on Monday to address the ongoing legal battle between the All India Pickleball Association (AIPA) and the Government of India (GOI), alongside the newly formed Indian Pickleball Association (IPA).

During the hearing, the GOI submitted a counter affidavit but requested additional time to finalize its documentation. The Court, however, insisted that the government present the complete file related to the formation and recognition of the contested IPA, emphasizing the need for transparency in the proceedings.

Adding complexity to the case, the GOI introduced a new intervener: the New Indian Pickleball Association (NIPA), a Bangalore-based entity established in 2021. NIPA, which merged with AIPA last year, is now challenging the legitimacy of the IPA, claiming unauthorized use of its name and legacy.

The Court expressed concern over these developments, underscoring the importance of clarity in the governance of pickleball in India. It has scheduled the next hearing for May 23, 2025, as the legal tussle continues to unfold.

AIPA remains steadfast in its position, asserting that any attempts to undermine the sport’s governance must be scrutinized under the law. The association has voiced its confidence in the Indian judiciary, believing that the rule of law will uphold the integrity of pickleball in the country.

In a statement, AIPA reiterated its commitment to fair play, sportsmanship, and clean governance, urging the Ministry to reassess its decisions in the interest of the sport and the broader Indian sporting community.

As the case progresses, all eyes will be on the upcoming hearing, which could set a precedent for the future of pickleball governance in India.
