Creston Pickleball Enthusiasts Compete Internationally at PPA World Championships

A team of six pickleball enthusiasts from Creston recently had the opportunity to showcase their skills on an international stage at the Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) World Championships in Dallas, Texas. The championships, which took place from Nov. 4 to 10, featured over 3,200 players from around the world.

The Creston players, ranging in age from 18 to 57, share a love for the inclusivity of the sport. Pickleball, which calls for light paddles and low-bouncing plastic balls, is known for its accessibility and ease of play, making it a popular choice for players of all ages and skill levels.

Levi Huber, a recent graduate from Kootenay River Secondary School, has been playing pickleball for the last three years alongside his dad, Randy Huber. Randy, who moved to Creston from northern Alberta, was introduced to the sport as a way to meet new people and quickly discovered his passion for it.

Not only is pickleball a social sport, but it also serves as an excellent form of exercise, allowing players to stay active and engaged well into their later years. Before competing in Dallas, the Hubers both qualified at the Idaho State Championship competition, showcasing their dedication and skill in the sport.

While some players performed better than others at the PPA World Championships, the shared sentiment among the Creston team was a desire to return and improve for next year. Jairus Stonehouse, a Creston player, expressed his satisfaction with their sixth-place finish in their age and skill level category, while Micah Shurgelo highlighted the learning experience gained from competing against top players.

One common theme among the Creston players is the supportive and welcoming atmosphere of the local club. Despite the lack of an indoor facility for year-round play and training, the competitive pickleball club in Creston continues to grow, with dedicated young players eager to improve and compete at a higher level.

Newcomers to the sport are encouraged to join the Creston Valley Pickleball Players club next spring, where they can learn from experienced players and coaches.
