Spotlight on Community Activation Grants Recipients: Safe Sport and Concussion Initiatives in Canadian Sport Organizations
Sport organizations across Canada are taking important steps to promote Safe Sport and concussion awareness initiatives at the community level. With the support of the Sport Information Resource Centre (SIRC) and the Community Activation Grants program, these organizations are making strides to ensure the safety and well-being of their participants.
Six of the 25 successful grant recipients have shared their stories and plans for advancing Safe Sport and concussion awareness in their communities. From Pickleball Hamilton to Soccability Canada, Freestyle BC, Edmonton North Zone Soccer Association, the Castaway Wanderers Rugby Football Club, and the Ottawa Sport Council, each organization has a unique approach to spreading awareness and education.
For Pickleball Hamilton, a recent incident highlighted the importance of concussion awareness in their sport, leading them to create educational videos and posters to inform and protect their members. Soccability Canada is focusing on Para sport concussion research and policies to ensure the safety of their athletes. Freestyle BC is enhancing their resources and services to create a barrier-free environment for all athletes. Edmonton North Zone Soccer Association is prioritizing coach education to ensure a safe return to play for their participants. The Castaway Wanderers Rugby Football Club is implementing a “3 Ts” campaign to educate their athletes on concussion prevention and return-to-contact protocols. The Ottawa Sport Council is developing a Safe Sport toolkit to provide resources and information to community sport organizations.
These organizations are not only focusing on their own initiatives but also sharing valuable tips for other community sport organizations looking to enhance their Safe Sport and concussion awareness programs. By leveraging existing resources, setting clear organizational goals, building step by step, and making local connections, organizations can create safer and more inclusive sport environments.
