Concerns over Impact on Vertigo Angustior Stall Trump Doonbeg Resort Plans

The Trump-owned Doonbeg resort in west Clare is facing a roadblock in its plans for new pickle ball courts and other improvements due to concerns about the impact on a tiny protected snail species, the Vertigo Angustior. Clare County Council has requested a report from TIGL Ireland Enterprises Ltd, owned by Donald Trump, on how the proposed works could affect the population of the snail on the resort’s lands.

The Council has highlighted the need for a full survey report on the snail, which is found in large numbers at the golf course and Shannon airport. Despite assurances from Mr. Trump in the past about being a friend to the Vertigo Angustior, the Council is seeking more information to ensure the conservation objectives of the snail are not compromised.

The planning application by TIGL Ireland Enterprises Ltd includes plans for pickle ball courts, basketball court, soft play areas, and other resort improvements. While the firm argues that the proposed development will not adversely affect the snail population, the Council has raised concerns about the lack of a survey report and the potential for health and safety issues due to golf ball strikes on patrons in the outdoor recreation areas.

Local residents have expressed mixed opinions on the proposed development, with some highlighting the economic benefits and job opportunities it could bring to the area, while others are concerned about increased traffic and potential negative impacts on property values. The Council is now awaiting further information from the Trump Doonbeg firm to address these issues before making a decision on the planning application.
