“American Red Cross Volunteer Shares Story of Life-Saving CPR and AED Training”

American Red Cross volunteer, Susan Tovey, shared a heartwarming story of survival and community support that unfolded during a pickleball tournament in Newport Beach. On June 29, 2021, Tovey’s friend Russ experienced a sudden cardiac event while playing in the tournament with his friend Mike.

Despite Russ’ history of cardiac issues, the situation turned critical when he collapsed on the court, unresponsive and not breathing. Mike, knowing Russ’ medical history, immediately sprang into action and began administering CPR while calling for help. A retired firefighter/paramedic and a quick-thinking woman with an AED rushed to assist, ultimately saving Russ’ life.

Thanks to the swift actions of these individuals, Russ was revived and transported to the hospital for further treatment. Now, he is using his experience to advocate for CPR, AED, and first aid training, emphasizing the importance of being prepared for emergencies.

In response to Russ’ ordeal, the community has rallied together to request American Red Cross training courses for residents. Dozens of people have already been trained in CPR and AED usage, with more classes scheduled to meet the demand.

Russ’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the lifesaving impact of CPR and AED training. He urges others to take advantage of Red Cross courses to be prepared to act in emergencies, emphasizing that every second counts in a cardiac arrest situation.

As Russ reflects on his second chance at life, he expresses gratitude for those who came to his aid. With a renewed appreciation for the value of preparedness, he encourages others to equip themselves with the skills and confidence needed to make a difference in critical moments.
