After years of sitting vacant, Mary Street Park in Clarkesville is set to come back to life with the opening of a new community center and pickleball courts. The city’s leaders have been working diligently on these projects, which are funded by taxpayers and aimed at revitalizing the area.
The old brick lodge on Mary Street, which once housed Sharing and Caring, will soon reopen as a community center. The 2,400-square-foot facility, built during the Great Depression, is currently undergoing renovations and is expected to open in mid-May. The city has invested approximately $135,000 in the project, with plans to make the space available for public rental for meetings and special events.
While progress on the community center is moving forward, work on the pickleball courts at Mary Street Park has hit a temporary roadblock. The two courts, which are being built on the site of the old community pool, have been delayed due to weather and scheduling conflicts with the paving contractor. The city council approved the construction of the courts last April at a cost of $82,500, with only $6,000 spent so far.
In addition to the pickleball courts, the city is also waiting for the delivery of pre-built bathrooms for the park. These modern facilities are designed to be durable, easy to maintain, and will enhance the overall park experience for visitors.
