Chennai to Set Up Three New Pickleball Courts with Discounted Booking Rates

The youth welfare and sports development department in Chennai plans to establish three new pickleball courts in key city areas—Chetpet, Nungambakkam, and Velachery—catering to the growing urban interest in the sport. With existing private courts charging ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 per hour, the government aims to offer bookings at a 30% discount to encourage wider community participation. Each court, costing around ₹12 lakh, will be equipped with fencing, nets, lighting, washrooms, and drinking water facilities. While coaching won’t be immediately available, officials may introduce it based on demand.

Pickleball, a simple paddle sport played by four people, is gaining popularity across all age groups due to its easy-to-learn rules and minimal maintenance. It has evolved from a casual pastime to a community sport, with players organizing friendly matches and connecting via apps like Turf Town. The recent MGM Tamil Nadu Pickleball tournament attracted over 250 participants from various districts, highlighting the sport’s expanding reach and appeal in the region.
