Florida Senate Moves Forward with Bill to Protect State Parks from Development
The Florida Senate took a major step on Tuesday in protecting the state’s precious natural resources by advancing a bill that would prevent the development of golf courses, pickleball courts, and hotel-style lodges in state parks. The bipartisan bill, sponsored by Sen. Gayle Harrell, aims to preserve the unique beauty and conservation of Florida’s state parks for future generations to enjoy.
The proposal, known as the “Great Outdoors Initiative,” sparked outrage last year when plans were revealed to potentially add golf courses and lodges to several state parks. The most controversial proposal was the addition of three golf courses at Jonathan Dickinson State Park, which prompted swift opposition from environmental groups and lawmakers alike.
In response to the public outcry, Gov. Ron DeSantis halted the initiative, and now Sen. Harrell and Rep. John Snyder have introduced bills to ensure that such development is prohibited in the future. The bill, which was unanimously approved by the Senate Environment and Natural Resources Committee, would only allow the construction of cabins with a maximum capacity of six people in state parks.
During the committee meeting, Sen. Carlos Guillermo Smith emphasized the importance of preserving the natural beauty of state parks, stating that “paving over our state parks with pickleball courts and golf courses and hotels and lodges” is not the purpose of these treasured spaces.
While environmental groups have expressed support for the bill, some have raised concerns about potential loopholes that could allow for other incompatible developments, such as large marinas. Eugene Kelly, president of the Florida Natural Plant Society, urged for clearer prohibitions on incompatible uses to prevent future battles over the protection of state parks.
As the legislative session approaches, the bill will be a key focus for lawmakers looking to safeguard Florida’s natural resources and ensure that state parks remain havens for wildlife and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
