Montgomery County Named Top Spot for Pickleball in Maryland

Montgomery County, known for its cultural diversity and healthy residents, has now been recognized as the top spot for the fast-growing sport of pickleball in Maryland. A new report from TeachMe.To has named Bethesda as the top community for pickleball in the state, with Rockville coming in second place and Potomac and Olney rounding out the top 10.

According to the report, Bethesda is leading Maryland’s pickleball surge, with 30.2% of the state’s lesson bookings in 2023. Rockville followed with 16.3% of the bookings, while Potomac and Olney were described as emerging hotspots with 2.3% each.

Robin Riley, director of Montgomery County’s Recreation Department, noted a surge in interest in pickleball across all ages. The department offers lessons and leagues for elementary and middle school students, as well as free drop-in pickleball sessions for participants of all abilities.

Montgomery Parks is actively working to increase the number of pickleball courts in the county, with six new facilities planned. Players can find more than 30 pickleball courts in county parks or visit MoCoPickleball.com to locate a local court.

Dill Dinkers Pickleball, which operates facilities in Rockville and North Bethesda, was also highlighted in the report. The company opened a 28,500-square-foot indoor facility in North Bethesda last year, earning recognition as the Best Indoor Pickleball Courts by Bethesda Magazine.

Pickleball has seen a rise in popularity in Montgomery County in recent years, with many residents taking up the sport as a way to make new friends in the Bethesda area. With the county’s commitment to expanding pickleball facilities, it’s clear that pickleball enthusiasts in Montgomery County have a lot to look forward to.
