Armaan Bhatia Makes History as India’s Top Pickleball Player
Cincinnati, Ohio – In a thrilling showdown at the APP Tour finals, Armaan Bhatia, India’s top-ranked men’s singles pickleball player, etched his name in history by becoming the first Indian man to secure a podium finish on American soil during his debut on the professional circuit. Despite a hard-fought battle, Bhatia ultimately fell to second-seeded Grayson Goldin of the United States, with scores of 15-11, 11-15, and 8-15.
The 26-year-old from Mumbai started the match with remarkable confidence, clinching the first game 15-11 and showcasing his skill and determination. However, Goldin, displaying resilience, rallied back to take the second game 15-11, setting the stage for a decisive third game. In a nail-biting finale, Goldin maintained his composure to secure the victory with a score of 15-8, marking his first men’s singles gold medal of the season.
“I’ve had a tough year mentally, and getting over that hump means a lot,” Goldin expressed after his victory. “I just love this place. The crowd is amazing, and I feel really comfortable here. Even though I’m a Florida boy, Cincinnati has a special place in my heart.”
Bhatia’s journey to the finals was nothing short of impressive. He demonstrated his evolution into a seasoned professional by pulling off a stunning upset against top-seeded Chris Haworth in the semifinals, winning decisively with scores of 15-9 and 15-4. His path to the final also included victories over Brandon Lane and Ammar Wazir, the bronze medalist, solidifying his status as a formidable competitor.
Last year, Bhatia achieved a rare treble in Indian pickleball, sweeping all three titles at the PWR DUPR India Masters 2024. His success is particularly remarkable considering he had limited exposure to pickleball outside of Mumbai until 2024. Alongside partner Harsh Mehta, he also claimed men’s doubles titles at the PPA Australia Gold Coast, the Hong Kong Open, and the World Pickleball Championships in Bali, along with two singles titles.
Bhatia’s latest achievement in Cincinnati is a testament to his dedication and meticulous preparation. Prior to the tournament, he underwent a week-long training stint at The Lab in Austin, Texas, a premier pickleball facility founded by Ryan Dawidjan and Carlos Di Laura. This rigorous training regimen has clearly paid off, as Bhatia continues to rise in the ranks of the sport.
As the pickleball community celebrates his historic achievement, Bhatia’s journey serves as an inspiration for aspiring athletes in India and beyond. With his sights set on future competitions, fans eagerly await what this rising star will accomplish next.
