80% of Americans Are Physically Active, Fueled by a Surge in Pickleball and Walking

A new report from the Sports and Fitness Industry Association reveals that 80% of Americans—about 247 million people—are physically active, continuing a positive trend in U.S. fitness. Walking for fitness remains the most popular activity, followed by trail hiking, treadmill running, and free weights. Notably, pickleball has surged in popularity with a 46% increase from 2023 to 2024 and a 311% rise over three years, alongside growth in racquet sports, pilates, trail running, and golf. The pandemic played a role in boosting activity levels as people sought solo or socially distanced exercise options during lockdowns.

Income influences activity rates, with higher-income groups showing greater participation due to the cost barriers of some sports. Despite this, the gap between income levels is narrowing. The recreation industry is thriving, growing faster than the GDP in 2024, driven by increased participation and profitability. However, the 80% figure includes casual participants who engage infrequently, and 20% of Americans remain inactive, facing health risks. Overall, the trend toward greater physical activity is encouraging for public health and the sports industry alike.
