Development of Pickleball Clubs in Sibu Secondary Schools Hits Milestone
Sibu Secondary Schools to Establish Pickleball Clubs in Co-Curricular Programme
The development of pickleball in Sibu has reached a new milestone as 10 secondary schools in the area are set to establish pickleball clubs as part of their co-curricular programme. This initiative is a result of a collaboration between the Sibu Pickleball Association (SPA) and the Sibu Education Department to promote the sport among students.
SPA president Joseph Chieng announced that the Sarawak Education Department has officially approved the formation of pickleball clubs in Sibu secondary schools. This approval will allow students participating in pickleball activities to earn co-curricular activity points, laying a solid foundation for the sport’s development in Sibu and Sarawak.
Representatives from the 10 schools, including SMK Sacred Heart, SMK Methodist, and SMK Bukit Assek, among others, recently attended a briefing conducted by SPA to discuss the formation of pickleball clubs. While the representatives welcomed the initiative, final approval from their respective school administrations will be required.
Chieng, who is also the Bukit Assek assemblyman, mentioned that SPA will provide each school with a set of pickleball equipment, including paddles, pickleballs, and a portable net. Additionally, SPA plans to organize the inaugural Sibu Inter-School Pickleball Tournament by the end of 2025.
Pickleball is a rapidly growing sport suitable for individuals of all ages, and introducing it into schools not only fosters students’ interest in sports but also enhances their teamwork skills and physical fitness. Chieng expressed his hope that more schools will join the initiative to nurture pickleball talent in Sibu and Sarawak.
The establishment of pickleball clubs in Sibu secondary schools marks a significant step towards promoting the sport and encouraging student participation in a fun and engaging way.
